Back-to-School Safety Tips
As you gear up for the start of the next school year, it’s the perfect time for kids and parents to review a few simple safety habits. Whether walking, riding a bike, or catching the bus, a little preparation can help for a safer start to the school year.
Heads Up
Wearing a properly fitted helmet is a must when riding bikes and scooters, no matter if the ride is long or short. Selecting a helmet with a Mips® Safety System is one way to further reduce the risk of a serious head injury. Wearing bright-colored clothing can also help drivers see you on rides more easily.
Street Safe
For those who walk to school, always use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing the street. Avoiding distractions like phone use or wearing headphones is important in higher traffic areas. The same is true when you get on and off the bus, so you can listen to the bus driver. It’s also a good idea to stand back from the curb whenever the bus is approaching.
Have a Plan
It’s a good idea to talk through the route to school before the year begins, including the following:
Go over directions.
Know emergency contacts.
Use the “buddy system,” and travel with a friend.
